Applicants
Guidelines and procedures
The Research Board meets on the dates published in the University diary at the beginning of each academic year. Only applications and reports received by 12:00 noon on the closing date are considered at the following meeting. The Secretary, with the consent of the Chairperson, may call additional meetings. Closing dates and times in the University diary are final.
Submissions
- Late submissions caused by delays in the internal postal system are not accepted.
- Papers should not be left to the last minute of the last day.
- The Board does not consider incomplete applications or reports, or papers where the Faculty Representative has not been adequately briefed before the closing date.
- The applicant submits the originals of progress reports, block allocation reports, external travel grant applications, research grant applications, and student research assistance applications to the Faculty Representative.
- Applications and reports must follow pro forma A, B, C and D. They must be typed on one side of A4, dark enough to reproduce, in font size 12 with single line spacing. Supporting documents may be attached.
- The application must be approved and signed by the Chairperson of the department, or by the Dean if the applicant is a Chairperson, and also signed by the Faculty Representative.
- Two copies of supporting documents (acceptance letters, quotations, equipment or consumable costings, travel itineraries) go to the Faculty Representative before the deadline.
| Paper | Maximum A4 pages |
|---|---|
| Progress report on a research grant | One |
| Block allocation report | Two |
| Application for an external travel grant | One |
| Application for a research grant | Two |
| Application for student research assistance | Two |
Any paper over these limits is rejected and returned by the Faculty Representative.
Use of funds
- Funds may not be used for any purpose other than the one for which they were granted, unless the Research Board gives specific authority.
- The Board will not sanction retrospective grants for work or travel undertaken before approval.
- Votes are set annually. The Board will not normally authorise grants for subsequent years. Anticipated further claims should be shown in the application.
- Only full-time academic members of staff may apply in their own name.
Chairperson’s action
The Chairperson may receive, for approval, research grant and student research assistance applications that the Board has considered and recommended. Any allocation made by Chairperson’s action is reviewed at a later Board meeting. External travel grants are not decided by Chairperson’s action. The maximum amount for Chairperson’s action is agreed by the Board at the beginning of each year. The current figure is available from the Secretary.
Faculty Representatives
Faculty Representatives advise on papers, present them at the meeting, and chair the faculty research committee. Their signature is required on each application or report. If a Faculty is not represented at the meeting, its applications are deferred.
